Tuesday 17th July Ilkley Quarry

Postby Will S » Wed Jul 11, 2018 11:05 am

There's a change of venue this week to Ilkley Quarry. NOT Rylstone.

Access to Barden Moor has been closed by the Bolton Abbey estate due to the fire risk caused by the continued heatwave. A pretty sensible decision given the fires over in Lancashire.

This weeks meet will now be Ilkley Quarry, nice and accessible and close to the Cow and Calf pub for a pint after. Crag details are below:

Please post below if you are interested.

Thanks,
Will

I'm interested - might even put some rock shoes on this time!

Otherwise, if anyone's interested in more practise of different belay setup scenarios, equalisation etc. I'm more than happy to help.

(Unless it's really midgy!)

Cheers,

JR.

I'll be coming as long as the dry weather holds out.

Folk were climbing on Rylstone this weekend and sostenuto plenty of walkers up there. Provided nobody smokes, I'm inclined to suggest just going up anyway...

Hi Will,

We've had a few weeks running of meets at distant crags so I'd like to keep the meet at Ilkley Quarry. Hopefully more members who live nearer Leeds can get to this one.

I'm sure its fine to climb at Rylstone provided that you are careful, and there's probably nothing wrong with individuals going up there. I'd prefer to ensure that a publicly
advertised meet doesn't take place at a venue where the landowners are concerned about fire risk.

If anyone has any more info about the closures and whether the signs are still up at the access points It may be worth starting another thread so people can be kept in the know. There's
very little info about it online at the moment.

Looking on both the BMC RAD and Natural England's site (which must show any restrictions for CROW land) - no fire-risk ban is listed for Barden Moor.
Which is interesting...

I suspect they just haven't updated it. I had it from the estate's own Twitter account that the restriction is still in place, but they are generally good at getting signs up about these things.

Will and JR,

Going on yesterdays experience at Wimberry, which also does not have any RAD restrictions or advisories in place, I would prefer to err on the side of caution and stick to Ilkley Quarry.

Sorry for the confusion. I agree with you Will - best not to have an official meet up there if the access is in question. I've started a new thread to see if I can tempt anyone into a careful Black Ops visit.
