Tuesday 11th June - The Mighty Glen

Postby Will Hunt » Thu Jun 06, 2019 12:51 pm

Within the woodland flow'ry gladed
By the oak tree's mossy root
The shining grass blade timber shaded
Now do quiver on the foot
And birds do whistle overhead
And water's bubbling in its bed
And there for me the apple tree
Do lean down low, in Linden Lea.

Yes, my friends, my jolly friends, it is time. Time to leave the earthly world above behind and slip down into the sylvan pool of Shipley Glen. Down there, time stands still. The urban world above is muted, and the sound of birds and the wind sighing through the treetops comes into a sharp focus.

Guarding the rim of this paradise, serving as a portal between worlds, is the crag. You'll have precious little need for the usual jingly-jangly bits — the ropes, the harnesses, the wires that claw and scratch at the skin of the rock. Leave them at home; but bring all the bouldering mats you can and we'll share them around.

I'll wait to see who will be joining me on this trip of transcendance and suggest a meeting spot accordingly. Wherever we end up, the parking is here:

The crag is a quick drier, so it's very unlikely that we'll need to cancel or move this meet, even if it rains in the early afternoon. Watch this space closer to the time for a final weather report.

When dusk falls and the world turns quiet we will respectfully withdraw to The Old Glen House and endeavour to make it less so.

Second closest to me too, Gilstead's hot rock being closer. Oh and I'll be there

It's a complete trek for me, but I'll probably come anyway because that's how I roll.

Does anyone want to go to Almscliff instead?

Karl,

assuming I've not mis-interpreted the tenor of your request, I suspect Paulina might be interested in routes there (as it's the closest crag to her current abode of York).

According to club statute, anybody choosing to go anywhere other than the official venue will be excommunicated.

Well this is awkward and my joke has backfired. Apologies to you Paulina, I will not be climbing on tuesday as I am working.

I was making a jibe at Mr Hunt who often likes to suggest alternative venues to scheduled club meets.

Ironically I have been told 'if you keeping joking around no will take you seriously'; in this case it would appear that I am still being taken seriously.

Glad to have you back in the area Paulina!!

Looking at the forecast it appears almost certain that the jokes, japes, and jibes are all moot.

Who knows, there could be some enormous bug in the Met Office's weather model, so I'll make the "official" call tomorrow but I'd advise everybody to stick their wall gear in the car tomorrow as well.

I much prefer Harrogate Wall - would anyone be up for going there as a change?

I would be up for Harrogate Wall if the Met office is right about the weather. Otherwise see you at Shipley.

Harrogate sounds good to me. Closer than Leeds wall, funnily enough.
