From everything already said it sounds like we’ve need some kind of e-ticking system.
Someone I know uses them for organising MTB events.

Advantages:
You can set up the number of “tickets” in advance as well as when entries go on sale (so the number of places on the meet, plus the date a month in advance)
When you buy a “ticket” you’re paying for it upfront. Removes any hassle of collecting money at a later point in time. (This works via paypal, so no barriers as you don’t need an account)
It can be set so you could buy up to two “tickets” in case people want to book on a meet as a pair.

Disadvantages:
Unsure how technically demanding it is, but its used widely elsewhere
Additional costs. Paypal will add on the commission, but its probably no more than an envelope+stamp used with the current system.
Someone would probably need to volunteer to do the technical admin

Wakefield Triathlon Club use a service called "membermojo" which looks promising: https://membermojo.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQiApaXxBRDNARIsAGFdaB-27Hh2gRb8qvwhTV2gmLKEr-uDyHfg6vTNB7EAfrER7ECbRgsOsDUaAiJAEALw_wcB

Here's their website:
https://www.wakefieldtriclub.co.uk/membership

They also seem to sell tickets to training sessions via an add in service called Ticket Tailor.

Like that one - worth considering.

Rough summary:
It was decided that we should try and update the booking system to an electronic system and move away from cheques
Members voted that the committee should form a working group (which can include non-committee members with relevant experience e.g. Luke the website wizard) to build the capability of online booking into the website and determine how best to take payments, then present this to the membership once ready for trial
Members (narrowly) voted against an EGM to vote for/against the final proposed system - though there was about 50% abstention on this

One possibility might be to use Eventbrite, which will take the money at the time of booking. For us to get £24, we would have to charge £25.64 to the member (or absorb the Eventbrite fee ourselves). Alternatively people could register on Eventbrite and pay through a separate system.
