Great Close Scar - Tuesday 26th July
Join us for an evening of climbing at a proper little gem of a Yorkshire Limestone venue - Great Close Scar.
Situated in a beautiful position above Malham Tarn with an easy 10-15 minute walk-in, stunning views, sun through the day and evening, and a prevailing wind to keep the midgies off, Great Close Scar is a perfect summer evening spot to get in some limestone trad leads. There are routes from Diff upwards, with plenty of well-deserved stars to go at. Sunshine Superman and Scimitar should be in the sights of any VS leaders - both brilliant routes - and We All Fall Down is a sweet little apéritif if you've got Pembroke E2s in mind for August. Black Death is a lovely E1 line, whilst most of what gets done at this crag are the brilliant little 1-2 star HSs, the classic HVS, and the HVD to MS lines. Something for everyone!
As this venue is only included in the Yorkshire Limestone definitive, if you would like a PDF topo please drop Penny a message on Whatsapp. At least two books will be with us at the venue, so there will be no issues with route-finding. Penny and James R know the venue very well and have collectively climbed most routes between them, and so you can always ask if in doubt.
It will be great to see some clusters of happy people climbing on this wonderful crag.
UKC page: https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crag ... /#overview
Crag location: 54.0961,-2.1544
PARKING DETAILS
Parking is free and bountiful (does this crag get any better?)
Drive through Malham (don't worry about the signs that say 'no parking past this point' as you are not planning to park in the village...)
Go up the rakes steeply on a bendy road that becomes Tarn Road
Keep going to the very top
When the road opens out and you have the tarn in front of you, park on the huge flat section on the right, where there will doubtless be other cars already
The crag is a 10-15 min walk from here.
APPROACH DETAILS
Follow the Pennine way/track, on the east side of the tarn
The crag appears on your right above the tarn, obvious and striking
Walk up the short hill to its base
ACCESS NOTES
This is an area of special scientific interest so as ever please respect the environment
ISSUES
There is signal at the crag. Contact Penny with any issues - number in the private section.

Seeing as I’ll be child-free, it’s my last day at work aaaaand it’s payday, it’d be rude not to.

I’ll come along and second some routes. Off for the six week holidays so if anyone is heading down early let me know. I am free all day.

I'll be there. Will try and get an early finish.
Re: Great Close Scar - Tuesday 26th July
Have looked over the guidebook pages for the crag. Fair to say I don’t think I’ll be smashing out leads on Tuesday. Anyone happy to have me as a second (or gear mule)?
Re: Great Close Scar - Tuesday 26th July
Hope to be there too.
I’ll climb with anyone! VS, HVS…

I’m hoping to be there! Think there’s enough for me to play on lead, especially the great gully area. Anyone fancy a lift share from Moortown-ish?
Weather’s looking a bit iffy on some forecasts- Penny, I assume you’ll let us know, if you’re there gardening from lunchtime, what the rock’s looking like?
