Navigation Skills Training - November 2022

Post by Lindsay M »

The latest offering in the LMC training programme is looking at Navigation skills. This will once again be run by the excellent Peak Mountaineering, and will be a single day course.

Venue: TBC but in the Peak
Date: 26th or 27th November (to suit attendees)
Timings: see below
Cost: £40-£55 each depending on numbers

Advanced Navigation
Requires good knowledge of navigation skills already.
The content is flexible depending on attendees (ie you can tailor the content to what you want to know) but the idea will be to run a "day into night" course, probably meeting about mid-day and continuing into the evening. This allows the principles of night/poor visibility navigation to be learned during the day and tested out during darkness.
Ratio is 4-6 people and one instructor

Navigation
Want to get out more but not confident of finding the way?
We can also offer a basic navigation course during the day (9-4 ish)
Ratio is 4-6 people and one instructor.
Examples of things you would learn (again can be tailored to attendees):
  • Understanding the map as a two-dimensional plan.
Using map symbols and scales on a variety of maps.
Orientating maps with and without a compass.
Using the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel.
Choosing simple navigation strategies and routes.
Using linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails.
Estimating distance both on maps and on the ground
Understanding contours to match landforms to their map representation.
    Relocating using simple techniques
    Understanding access rights and responsibilities.
Demonstrating knowledge of the countryside code and procedures to be followed in emergencies.
Please let me know which course you would be interested in, and your availability on the 26th and 27th November.

Hi John and Georgina,

Is this the basic Navigation course you are interested in? If so we would just need at least 1 more person and I can get in touch with Peak and get a date set.
