Walking Meet - Saturday 10th December - Skipton

Post by Alice »

Hello,

Peter has kindly offered to be leader for our December walk on Saturday 10th.

The route is 10 3/4 miles meeting at Skipton Town Hall and heading to Flasby Fell, Flasby, the Leeds Liverpool Canal and back to Skipton. The route is described as a marvellous walk over the colourful fells of north-west Skipton and includes the traverse of Sharp Haw, the highest point on Flasby Fell. It’s Walk 3 in the Cicerone Historic Walks in North Yorkshire book if anybody has a copy of that.

There will be plenty of options for coffee / hot chocolates / beer upon return to Skipton!

Suggested meeting time at Skipton Town Hall is 9:30am to ensure everyone is comfortably back in daylight.

Anyone wanting to join please sign up below!

Thank you
Alice

Lovely group forming for the walk on Saturday. I suggest we meet in front of Skipton castle near the gatehouse. I’ve plotted the walk on OS and it is just over 5 hours, so if we meet at 9.30 we should easily be done by 3.

There are a few car parks, none of them are cheap though. Cavendish street is £5.50. Train station is £6.00. Coach street is £5.50. If anybody knows anywhere cheaper, or free maybe - then please post up.

Getting the train may be a better option, does anybody know if there are train strikes this weekend?

It looks like it will be a proper winter cold day, so xmas ear muffs may be required, and a glass of mulled wine upon return to Skipton.

I think the big Christmas market is on in Skipton on the day. I went last year and it was rammed. The Rotary Club offer a charity car park at the Skipton Building Society HQ every weekend.if you drive in from the A59 its on your left before you get into town.. You should easily get parked early morning but leaving may be a challenge.

Thanks for local intel John. Train is looking more and more appealing. Car sharing also a good option.

I’m keen! Haven’t yet decided between the train and driving over; it looks like there are a couple of trains that would work:

08:19 from Leeds arrives 08:55
08:25 from Leeds arrives 09:09

I’ll probably aim for the earlier faster one if I come by train, gives a bit more contingency time (and google says it’s a 13 min walk from train to town hall)

Just been to Skipton today and the Christmas Market is NOT on on Saturday. Ghe normal Saturday Market will be on but the high street should be open to cars.
