Climbing Skills Training 2023

Post by DavidPonting »

Following a bunch of discussions at the wall over the past few weeks, it appears that two types of training course would be rather interesting to people, so let me know ASAP if you would like to get on either of these and I'll start the process of liaising with our favourite Peak Mountaineering. Paul typically tailors skills to a specific group's needs, so if you have anything in particular you want/need to learn let me know. Estimated cost would be £45-£60 per head based on past courses for a day course, either Saturday or Sunday and date arranged to suit those interested and Paul's availability. Would hope we can run multiple groups if needed.

In case it isn’t obvious, you’ll need to be a paid-up member to attend either!

'Intro to Rock' - time to take those skills outdoors! Lead belaying, reading the route when it isn't colour-coded, possibly gear placement...
23rd April
1. Harry Sherman
2. Steph Jenkins
3. Lowri Jones
4. Martha
5. Chris M

Another time:
1. Michael Murray
2. Chloe Gelder

Learn-to-Lead (1:2 ratio ideally)
1. Harriet Wood
2. Ed Steele

3. Clare A
4. Laura McAlister

5. Harry Sherman
6. Stef Jenkins

Seacliff skills - abseils, ascending, getting yourself out of sticky situations, considerations like tides...
16th July
1. Tom Guilfoyle
2. Ben Crawford
3. Sarah Mc
4. Matthew Knight
5. Matt Eckersley
6. Hannah Radford

Would like to do another time

Hello!

I'm Lowri, been lurking for a while on the message board but have not actually come along to anything yet - & not yet a paid up member, but the reason for that is very relevant to this post...!
I did my lead course @ Big depot a while back, but despite bouldering & top roping for years have never climbed outside so didnt want to turn up at an evening meet last summer when I wouldn't know what I was doing...I'd been hoping to get some lead practice in and come along to some evenings over winter, but with Big Depot refurbing that obviously hasn't happened.

All that meaning, I would be very interested in the intro to rock, if not having come along to anything else yet isn't an issue? and would ofc join up/pay properly ahead of time.

Hi Lowri, that should be fine! You’re obviously still welcome to join us indoors or on walking meets even before you get skilled up, and we’d simply ask that you’re joined and paid up as we confirm the date and cost of the course!

Ed, you’re not the first to ask for Learn to Lead, so will ask…

Those keen for the intro course, can everyone make either the 22nd/23rd April? Scream now if you can’t, Paul’s availability is getting booked up

—edit: Nav course is the 22nd, so we’re aiming for the 23rd!—
