Basic Navigation day course

Post by Alice »

UPDATE - sadly not enough interest to run the course on Sat 22nd April so will look to rearrange it for later in the year, depending on numbers. Sorry.

Hi all,

Following on from the previous navigation training thread I can now share details of our upcoming Basic Navigation training day from Peak Mountaineering on Saturday 22nd April.

Time: 9:30-4:30. (This can be flexible if a 10am start would suit attendees better - do let me know if/when you post up if that would be better)

The selection of techniques covered will include:

• Understanding the map as a two-dimensional plan.
• Using map symbols and scales on a variety of maps.
• Orientating maps with and without a compass.
• Using the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel.
• Choosing simple navigation strategies and routes.
• Using linear features (e.g. paths and tracks) as handrails.
• Estimating distance both on maps and on the ground
• Understanding contours to match landforms to their map representation.
• Relocating using simple techniques
• Understanding access rights and responsibilities.
• Demonstrating knowledge of the countryside code and procedures to be followed in emergencies.

The course will be led at a ratio of 1:6 with the possibility to extend to 1:8 if there is enough interest!

Cost is £30 to £40 per person, depending on numbers.

Please do sign up as soon as possible so that I can confirm this with Peak Mountaineering. Final cut off date for confirming the course is 24th March.

Thanks and looking forward to it!
Alice

Excellent Maddie - I’ll add your name to the list.

Yes, John, I’ve just asked but it will be in the Peak District. I think previous courses have been held in the Edale area.

Cheers,

Is anyone else interested in this?
Sadly I am going to have to pull out so so far we only have 2 confirmed (Maddie & Paul Sp) and need at least 6 people to make it viable to run the course.

If you are still interested in a basic nav course, but just can’t make this date (like Tom) please post up to say so and I’ll try and rearrange.

I need to let Peak Mountaineering know by Friday at the latest!

Thanks, Alice

Sadly there has not been enough interest for this date to run the course. Hope we can arrange something for later in the year.
