DRY TOOLING & WINTER PREP MEET - Masson - 1st Oct
Re: DRY TOOLING & WINTER PREP MEET - Masson - 1st Oct
I've plopped this in my calendar to come along to but I'm interested in the sport climbing in the area as I've had a taste of dry tooling at the Bradford Climbing Hub in March.

Re: DRY TOOLING & WINTER PREP MEET - Masson - 1st Oct
If it's dry, Emm, there's one wall that should be climbable at this time of year.

JR yeah, I'm at the moment billy no mates for car shares so can get the two of us. Will also have another 2 seats free if anyone want a lift from LS28 and/or surrounding area.

Hey,
By all means come along, honestly, the tooling at the hub is massively different to outdoor tooling, there's way more to be had at Masson, whole different kettle of fish

If you want to get the low down on car shares & tooling info etc, my number is on the original post, drop me a whatsapp & i'll add you into the chat.

Hi Sean,
I’m a new prospective member and whilst I didn’t sign up to become a dry-tooler, your enthusiasm has caught my attention!

Hi Will,
Consider yourself signed up! Can you message me on whatsapp (number on original post) so i can add you into the whatsapp group for car shares etc? We really need to reduce the number of cars ha!
Do you have your own kit? Axes, crampons etc?

Additional pre-meet info: If you've been to Masson before, dont bother reading and park responsibly.
Strongly recommend getting down early, there are going to be lots of us and parking is limited, currently we are up to ~8 cars, so make the most of car shares and get down as early as you dare. I'll be there super early putting ropes up. co-ordinates for the parking are on the original post. It's a narrow lane initially, dont worry, you're on the right road.
Instructions for how to get to the crag are in the guide book that i've put in the whatsapp group. It's a straight path from the road, over a stile, through a cow field, through a full-width metal gate with a BMC sign and into the quarry, head to the back of the quarry, follow the screams.
KIT
If any of your axes are fitted with an Azde, either leave it attached and hope you don't hit yourself with it. Remove it. Or just wrap it (few sheets of kitchen roll & some tape will do for one day).
Spare crampons are going to be scarce, but there should be plenty of axes. Crampons aren't really the highlight of the experience anyway
Remember to bring rock shoes! unless you're an experience dry-tooler & are comfortable with whatever boot & crampon arrangement you have.
If you have crampon compatible boots, bring them.
If you can avoid it, dont bring your favourite ninja downturned rock shoes, Masson is chossy!
if you have a GRIGRI or other spring assisted belay device, bring it.
I should note that personal liability is not covered under normal club insurance, you're only covered if you have individual BMC insurance. If you want clarification, drop Sarah a message.
If youre not in the whatsapp group and want in, let me know. If you want the guidebook and (like everyone who has clearly muted it already, me included) hate group chats, contact me and i'll find a way to send you it.
IMPORTANT
PUB: The miners standard is a few miles from the crag and a classic within the inner tooling circle, but quite small, so i'll see who's keen on the day and make a decision about where to go on the day.

I would be 1000% up for this, but I'm doing an extra day at work on the 1st.

Right then, if I pick up Mr Kisala in Pudsey, who else is near that neck of the woods who could converge there? Let's say two other people max to keep it comfortable given the kit we'll also be carrying.
It's a fair trek from Leeds to that end of the Peak (about 80 miles).
Also, again, I'd re-iterate that it could also be possible to converge at a point near Masson Lees and stuff more people into fewer cars there.
Rin - I've got the relevant Peak limestone guide that contains the sport climbing at Masson Lees so I'll bring that.

JR, based on the group chat, looks like just about everyone else has already got a car share going, the only people currently not in car shares areJR wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 3:42 pm Right then, if I pick up Mr Kisala in Pudsey, who else is near that neck of the woods who could converge there? Will P (who spoke to Lucasz the other day and may jump in with you)
Rin, who i gather lives in sheff. So looks like you should be all set.
Steph, who is seemingly a ghost on the matter, she is over towards roundhay about 7 miles from you & there is a clear route to the motorway from her, maybe a possibility for you.
Good idea on parking further out, although, we are now down to a very reasonable number of cars so there should be no need to park anywhere further from Masson and pile into less cars. if such a thing should happen, however, the norm is the road leading up the hill from the Sainsbury's fuel garage a couple of miles away. It'd good to avoid this is possible, since it'll take away from climbing time! But if the number of cars does increase any more, point taken, we should probably do this!

Rosi - FYI - I've got Clare's B2 boots for you to borrow in my possession and I'll be bringing them down with me.
With the loss of my two lift shares I might now head down on Saturday and get out with some of my Peak mates & stay over.

If I’m one of the two losses … I am still coming! If that makes a difference haha
